Rubio and Newsom stay together at the World Cup amid rising 2028 presidential speculations

Rubio Meets Paraguayan President at World Cup Opener

During the U.S. World Cup opening game in California, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Paraguayan President Santiago Peña. This meeting highlighted the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts amid the international soccer tournament, according to a State Department official.

“Secretary Rubio was honored to attend the first World Cup game in the United States,” an administration official mentioned. They noted that Rubio has consistently worked to further U.S. goals and seized the chance to discuss the strategic partnership with Peña during the game. Meanwhile, the U.S. men’s team triumphed over Paraguay with a 4-1 victory at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The Secretary’s presence at the game drew political attention, particularly because he was reportedly in the same suite as California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The match was a significant moment as it kicked off the U.S. World Cup campaign, marked by an early goal that set a positive tone for the team.

This event brought together two major political figures from different parties, sparking conversation about the upcoming 2028 presidential election. Newsom has faced inquiries about a potential presidential bid and has hinted at considering it, though he hasn’t made any concrete announcements.

Similarly, Rubio, who previously ran for president and served in Trump’s Cabinet, is also mentioned as a possible candidate. However, the State Department didn’t elaborate on the specifics of the Rubio-Peña meeting, leaving questions about whether it was prearranged or what topics were covered.

Paraguay maintains strong ties with the U.S. and is one of the few South American allies of Taiwan, adding to its strategic importance as the U.S. and China compete for influence in the region.

The World Cup is set to attract various governmental leaders and officials as matches unfold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Both the State Department and Newsom’s office did not provide immediate comments on the meeting’s details, reflecting the ongoing diplomatic activities surrounding the tournament’s inaugural game.
