Vice President J.D. Vance mentioned that President Trump sometimes brings up the possibility of a 2028 run. Vance feels confident that key Republican figures would back him if Trump opted to run.
“I don’t really initiate the conversation, but the president certainly does, both in public and private settings,” Vance shared with “CBS Sunday Morning.”
“He has that political instinct. It’s something he enjoys and finds intriguing,” Vance added. “He’s not overly positive or negative about it; he talks about it like, ‘What do you think will happen?'”
Mr. Vance, who has previously expressed frustration with the focus on 2028, told reporters he wouldn’t make a decision on running until after the midterm elections.
While Vance tries to downplay the 2028 conversation, Trump has publicly joked about the prospects, playfully asking people to weigh in on whether they would prefer Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the potential Republican candidate.
“Does anyone prefer J.D. Vance over Marco Rubio?” Trump questioned at a recent event.
“Well, that sounds like a solid ticket,” he added.
Rubio has made it clear he wouldn’t run alongside Vance if Vance were to become the nominee. Trump hasn’t offered any strong public endorsements for either candidate.
“I believe the president will be supportive of whatever decision I end up making,” Vance stated. “But we haven’t yet discussed how that will play out.”
Regarding the 2028 issue, Vance reiterated his familiar stance that he would decide after the midterms.
“Usha and I definitely plan to sit down and talk about our family’s future,” Vance emphasized, noting these discussions would occur post-midterm elections. “I generally try to delay decisions until I absolutely need to make them.”
Vance shared this information while he was promoting his second memoir, “Communion: Finding My Back to Faith,” which is set to release on Tuesday. During the interview, Second Lady Usha Vance mentioned that the murder of Charlie Kirk prompted them to consider having a fourth child.
“It really intensified the feeling for JD that they had been considering this, and that having another child could bring as much love as the three we already have,” Usha reflected.
“It brought clarity.” She went on to say, “Even if we couldn’t have another child, we were content with the family we had,” noting how impactful the conversation was in light of her own family’s experiences.
