J.D. Vance and Wife Discuss Their Family Choices

Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, shared that the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last year played a role in their decision to expand their family by having a fourth child.

The couple appeared on “CBS News Sunday Morning” to discuss Vance’s forthcoming book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith.” Usha recounted how, on the day Kirk was killed, she was with his wife, Erica, who expressed deep regret for only having two children.

In his book, Vance reflects that although they had considered having another child earlier, Kirk’s death shifted their perspective. Usha noted, “I think it really increased JD’s sense that we had been talking about this for a while. There was a chance to love another child just as we love the three we have.”

She further explained, “It really crystallized…” and emphasized how powerful Erica’s words about family were for both of them. They announced Usha’s pregnancy via social media in January, revealing that they are expecting a boy in July.

While Usha made it clear that Kirk’s assassination wasn’t the primary factor for deciding to have another child, she acknowledged that it occurred while they were already contemplating the prospect. “I had already started opening up to that possibility,” she said, highlighting that their conversation was well underway.

The Vances are already parents to Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. Vance’s book is set to release on June 16, and he described it as detailing his “long, winding road” to faith, a journey he felt had been lost during his younger years.
