Lakers speculation grows as Nets and Pistons consider Austin Reaves

Austin Reeves is poised to become a highly sought-after free agent in basketball. However, all indicators suggest he will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he seems to want to be.

NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that the Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons are positioning themselves as potential contenders for the Lakers guard as free agency approaches. Still, there’s skepticism among league officials about whether anyone will truly make a strong push to sign Reeves away from the Lakers.

Stein noted, “The Lakers are widely expected to re-sign Reaves.” He highlighted Reeves’ affection for Los Angeles and his developing connection with Luka Doncic as crucial factors favoring the Lakers in this scenario.

This mutually beneficial relationship has become one of the league’s best-kept secrets.

Reeves is, um, expected to pursue a substantial contract since he opted out of his $14.9 million player option to enter unrestricted free agency.

At just 28, he recently achieved the best contract of his career after averaging 23.3 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds last season.

The Nets have often been viewed as a significant threat. There were earlier claims that Brooklyn might consider offering Reeves a lengthy deal worth around $178.5 million. But Stein seems to suggest that the Nets might be opting for shorter contracts instead of aggressively pursuing free agents this summer.

Detroit’s interest appears less specific, too. While Reeves could complement All-Star guard Cade Cunningham well, Stein indicated the Pistons are likely to focus more on trade acquisitions than hefty free agency spending.

On top of that, Detroit has key contract decisions upcoming for young talents like Jalen Duren and Orser Thompson, complicating any potential huge offer for Reeves.

This places the Lakers in a familiar situation.

Reeves has transformed from an undrafted player to a vital part of the franchise. His scoring abilities and offensive creativity make him a natural fit alongside Doncic, who has already expressed a desire to keep playing with his close friend.

The Lakers are well aware that replacing his production will be nearly impossible.

Recently, an NBA executive mentioned to The Athletic, “You can’t let a talented player like that walk.”

While other teams will likely continue to scout Reeves over the coming weeks, unless there’s a significant shift, expectations around the league remain steady. He will get a substantial payday, and the Lakers seem the most likely to provide it.
