Knicks Eyeing the Title, Nets in Rebuild Mode

As the Knicks strive for a championship, the Nets find themselves grappling with a challenging rebuilding phase. It’s, um, quite a contrast, really—one team pushing ahead while the other is, well, kind of stuck.

Brooklyn might feel a bit embarrassed watching all the success across the East River, but they’re making efforts to bring in talent to help them get back in the running.

Even if the Nets can’t snag stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Donovan Mitchell, there are still viable options to facilitate a more organic rebuild.

Take a look at players like Austin Reeves, Peyton Watson, or Tali Eason.

If Reeves decides to opt out of his contract with the Lakers, which is $14.9 million annually, he could turn out to be one of the most sought-after players this offseason. There’s a sense in the league that the Nets could be top contenders for his services.

However, it’s probably worth noting that many expect Reeves to stick with the Lakers next season. I mean, he’s expressed a desire to stay, and the team wants him back. Plus, it seems like Luka Doncic could potentially influence his decision as well. But, unlike restricted free agents like Watson, Eason, and Jalen Duren, Reeves has the power to decide his own fate.

It could be tempting for him to consider Brooklyn.

The Nets aren’t on the verge of contention right now, and it might be a smart move to avoid making rash trades that could jeopardize their future. Yet, they have enough cap space to attract a max player, like Reeves, without depleting their draft assets.

Not long ago, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps said Brooklyn was a serious competitor for Reeves. Then, just recently, The Athletic mentioned that the Nets might extend a four-year, $178.5 million offer to him as free agency opens on June 30. Other teams like the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks are also reportedly interested.

Of course, the Lakers have the upper hand in offering Reeves a five-year deal worth $239 million, but it’ll be interesting to see how much the new owner, Mark Walter, is willing to commit.

Nets GM Sean Marks has some crucial decisions ahead this offseason, from how to manage their sixth overall draft pick to whether to renegotiate Michael Porter Jr.’s expiring $40 million contract.

Globally speaking, the Nets, lacking in controlling their 2027 draft pick, will need to focus on developing a young roster without the motivation to tank. How will they use their $35 million to $40 million in cap space? Will they pursue veterans in free agency and trades, or will they aim to gather more future assets like they did with Porter by trading for Denver’s 2032 pick?

The answer could fall somewhere in between. Brooklyn might like to bring in a starting-caliber player without sacrificing their first-round picks, meaning Reeves remains an appealing option—even with the possibility of a sign-and-trade.

Reeves put up impressive stats this season, averaging 23.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds while playing alongside stars like Doncic and LeBron James. When Doncic was out, Reeves escalated his game to average 28.6 points and eight assists, creating a potential dynamic duo with Porter in Brooklyn.

Though there are other unrestricted free agents like Andrew Wiggins and Rui Hachimura in the mix, players like Watson, Eason, and Duren are restricted, allowing the team to maintain control by matching any offers.

Nets Equipment Manager Recognized for Acting Role

Nets equipment manager Forrest Webber is making headlines, officially contending for an Emmy Award for his role in “Black Rabbit.”

Although nominations are still pending, he’s garnered acclaim for his work in the Netflix series, which, ironically, had some portions filmed at Barclays Center, where he juggles another job.

Webber expressed his excitement: “It’s definitely an honor to see my name on the Emmy ballot and to be part of the Television Academy. It’s a great stepping stone for my career.” He added, “This job was incredibly challenging, and I take great pride in what I brought to Black Rabbit. However, I’m equally focused on the overall value of the show. It’s all intricately crafted, and I truly hope our creative team receives the recognition it deserves.”
