Oil Prices Drop Following US-Iran Peace Agreement

Oil prices have seen a significant decline after the announcement of a peace deal between the US and Iran. As of Monday morning, prices were reported at $80 per barrel, reflecting more than a 5% drop and marking a two-month low.

On Sunday, President Trump revealed the peace agreement with Iran, set to be signed on Friday. He emphasized that reopening the Strait of Hormuz post-signing would allow oil to “flow to both ends.” Following this, the president noted that oil-laden ships had already begun navigating through the waterway.

“Many ships are starting to leave the Strait of Hormuz with oil. They are proceeding along the southern ‘highway,’ which is completely safe, secure, and pristine. There are other routes!!!” Trump stated.

The Strait of Hormuz, primarily shared by Iran and Oman, is crucial for global energy supply, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s liquid oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passing through it before recent hostilities. During the conflict with Iran, oil prices skyrocketed past $112 per barrel, although they have fluctuated significantly in the past couple of months.

On February 28, the US, in collaboration with Israel, initiated Operation Epic Fury against Iran, which included aggressive actions like mine-laying, effectively closing off the Strait. Following a fragile cease-fire in April, the US also imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and shifted operational strategies.

Despite assurances that the strait was “totally” closed, President Trump reported that US military assistance had been facilitating the passage of ships through the strait at night, eluding Iranian detection. He later noted that millions of barrels of oil had successfully traversed the waterway during this time.

He mentioned that by instructing ships to disable their transponders and tracking devices, over 100 million barrels of oil were moved past Iranian forces without being detected.
