De Niro Criticizes America in Speech

Actor Robert De Niro recently made headlines with a controversial speech that seemed to counter a presidential event featuring a UFC bout at the White House. During a performance at “Stand Up, Sing: A Concert for the First Amendment” in New York, he instructed the audience to halt their applause for America, suggesting a more critical perspective.

While President Donald Trump’s event showcased military flyovers and displays of patriotism, De Niro’s address took a starkly different tone.

He shared a letter expressing the sentiment that, “Regardless of our party affiliation or political affiliation, we all love our country.” Yet, in response to the audience’s cheers, he interjected, “Not so fast!” The actor elaborated, saying, “The words, ‘We all love our country,’ got stuck in my throat because we’re not a very loving country right now. It’s like an abused spouse who says they love their abuser.” This comment resonated with the audience, prompting applause.

De Niro went on to voice his inability to love a nation that initiates what he called a “foolish and inhumane war,” resulting in the deaths of thousands of innocent individuals and indirectly contributing to the suffering of millions more. He further lamented a country that denies healthcare to millions, while enriching what he referred to as the “Trump-Epstein class.”

He expressed strong feelings against a country that deploys masked militias against its citizens, tortures neighbors, and separates families. His critical remarks extended to Trump, accusing him of being a “racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant.” He concluded by emphasizing his struggle to appreciate a nation led by Trump and what he described as a sycophantic Congress.

Meanwhile, Trump’s event highlighted American symbols, including military jets and eagles, as fighters showcased their skills to an audience of service members and their families. De Niro has consistently voiced his disapproval of Trump and his policies, and he remains outspoken about his concerns as the 2024 elections approach.
