Hakeem Jeffries challenged on Biden's gas prices following Trump's comments

Jeffries Criticizes Rising Gas Prices Amid Biden’s Administration

During a morning discussion, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York addressed the issue of increasing gas prices, linking them to President Donald Trump’s foreign policy. He specifically referenced Trump’s dealings with Iran, characterizing them as detrimental.

Jeffries stated, “This was a reckless war of choice that clearly exacted a heavy toll on the American people, especially concerning rising gasoline prices in an environment where the cost of living is already too high.”

He was echoed by Vice President Kamala Harris, who suggested that the rising gas prices stem from Trump’s military decisions.

While emphasizing the necessity for Americans to tackle their own challenges, Jeffries encountered a reminder from co-host Rosanna Scott. She pointed out that gas prices also spiked during the tenures of former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Scott commented, “Gasoline prices went up under Obama, right? Same with Biden.” This led to a back-and-forth where Jeffries attempted to respond, though Scott interrupted him with a question regarding gas prices exceeding $5.

Jeffries responded cautiously, “Well, right after the pandemic situation, we had gas prices…” To which Scott added, “I remember eggs were $12 a dozen.”

The conversation shifted focus as Scott then spoke with a New York congressman about the recent success of the New York Knicks in the NBA.

An Energy Secretary mentioned that the Trump administration was open to the idea of suspending the federal gas tax amid the rising prices.

Fox News reached out to Jeffries’ office for comments, but there was no immediate reply.

Gas prices reached an all-time average high in 2019, hitting $5.02 per gallon under Biden’s administration in June 2022. Some Democratic lawmakers attributed this spike to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic and the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, coining the phrase “Putin’s price gouging.”

In the backdrop, the White House indicated that soaring oil prices were a temporary issue, emphasizing Trump’s push for energy dominance during the Iran conflict.

Under Trump, gasoline prices peaked just last month, surpassing $4.50 per gallon, but have seen a decline in recent weeks with ongoing negotiations around Iran.
