Drone and Missile Attacks on Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — A night assault from Russia involved hundreds of drones and numerous missiles targeting Ukraine’s major cities, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and damaging a renowned religious site, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other officials on Monday.

The strikes on Kyiv and the second-largest city, Kharkiv, followed phone discussions on Sunday between President Zelenskiy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump. This suggests that diplomatic efforts from Washington to mediate in the conflict, which erupted after Russia’s large-scale invasion in February 2022, are still ongoing.

The ongoing war in Ukraine is set to be a topic of discussion at the G7 summit in France on Tuesday, with both Zelenskiy and Trump in attendance. The Ukrainian president aims to draw attention to his country’s struggles amid international distractions like the situation in Iran.

“This is Russia asserting its determination to prolong the conflict,” Zelenskiy noted in a post on X, referring to the recent attacks on civilian infrastructure, including the historic Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, which dates back to the 11th century.

He emphasized the need for a strong response from G7 countries, expecting it to be both decisive and meaningful, calling for enhanced support for Ukraine’s air defenses, particularly anti-ballistic systems.

According to Zelenskiy, the airstrikes have claimed the lives of 11 civilians and emergency responders, injuring 53 across Ukraine.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported five deaths, while at least 30 individuals were hurt, including two young children aged 5 and 6, as stated by Timur Tkachenko, who heads the city’s military administration.

A series of intense explosions reverberated throughout Kyiv, with drones and missiles causing panic as residents sought shelter. Smoke billowed from multiple locations across the city.

Tkachenko indicated that within a brief timeframe, five strikes targeted various civilian sites in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky district, affecting a high-rise apartment building as well as a local grocery and market, both of which caught fire. A nine-story building in the Oboronsky district was also struck directly.

The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed these attacks aimed at defense and industrial sites in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, particularly targeting facilities involved in the production of drone and missile components. A workshop for medium to long-range drones at the Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv was mentioned as one of the targets.

Additionally, Russia reported strikes on a radar factory in Kyiv, which allegedly manufactures parts for drones, and a Mayak factory linked to long-range missiles. Reports also suggested a conscription office in Kyiv was hit.

Details were still emerging regarding the 11th fatality from the attacks.

In Kyiv, smoke surrounded the iconic golden dome of the Dormition Cathedral within the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, a significant religious monument. Metropolitan Epiphanius, the leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, spoke out about the assault, labeling it a further crime against humanity and a strike at history and Christianity, urging prayers to protect the site.

The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra comprises a vast network of monasteries and churches, constructed over centuries and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring extensive catacombs and historical architecture.

President Zelenskiy referred to the damage as one of Russia’s gravest transgressions against Christian heritage. He visited the site alongside Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko and other officials.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault expressed that this attack resonates for the French similarly to a bombing of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Ukraine’s National Commission for UNESCO urged the global community to increase pressure on Russia to halt its aggressive actions and to exclude it from the organization, stating that Russia’s destruction of cultural heritage is an attempt to erase historical memory.

The Russian Defense Ministry, without providing evidence, asserted that one of the attacks might have been an errant Ukrainian-made U.S. Patriot missile.

Reports from Ukraine’s air force indicated that overnight, Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones, mainly targeting Kyiv, but also impacting Dnipro and Kharkiv. Ukrainian military responses reportedly intercepted or neutralized a majority of these threats.

Preliminary assessments indicate that 20 ballistic missiles and various attack drones affected multiple locations throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Russia’s military claimed to have downed 123 Ukrainian drones during the night.
