Oklahoma Gubernatorial Primary Update
In the upcoming runoff scheduled for August 25, former Oklahoma Senator Mike Mazzei, backed by Trump, and Attorney General Gentner Drummond have moved ahead in the Republican gubernatorial primary. They outperformed multiple candidates aiming to succeed the term-limited Governor Kevin Stitt.
Stitt has recently taken on a prominent role as the top Republican within the National Governors Association, adding to the intrigue of a tightly contested race.
Trump has characterized Mazzei as a steadfast supporter of the MAGA movement, which introduces further unpredictability into an already crowded field. Until now, both Mazzei and Drummond were closely competing against businessman Chip Keating and former House Speaker Charles McCaul.
Key Players and Their Platforms
Trump claimed a significant victory in Oklahoma, highlighting that it’s one of the few states without any blue counties. Mazzei is focusing on pivotal issues such as abolishing property tax, safeguarding federal lands from foreign ownership, enhancing literacy rates, and tackling government waste. His previous role as state budget director under Stitt may provide him with a strategic edge.
However, not everyone is on board with Mazzei’s choices; he faced criticism for bringing Roger Stone on as a campaign consultant. Stone, a well-known figure in political circles, stirred controversy in the past due to his legal troubles, including a raid on his home while cameras rolled.
In defense, Mazzei stated, “Roger Stone is one of the many political advisors and teammates that I’ve known for months and months,” suggesting that familiarity in politics can be beneficial.
Contrasting Views in the Race
Drummond is emphasizing his tough background as Attorney General, harnessing his military experience as a fighter pilot to connect with voters. His campaign website touts his decorated military service during the Gulf War, framing him as a leader who answered the call for duty.
Drummond has criticized the Biden administration for perceived overreach and criticized policies allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports, tapping into significant concerns within the community.
Meanwhile, McCaul has campaigned on principles of family, faith, and moral governance, while promoting a conservative economic plan that includes abolishing state income and property taxes.
Keating, a former law enforcement officer, is advocating for a security-first approach, addressing issues like human trafficking and border security, labeling Antifa as “domestic radical terrorists.”
This race is shaping up to be a fascinating intersection of personal histories, political endorsements, and contrasting views as the candidates gear up for the final showdown in August.
