Hillary Clinton Critiques Biden’s 2024 Re-election Bid

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton openly criticized President Joe Biden for his decision to run for re-election in 2024, calling it a “terrible mistake” during a discussion with David Remnick of 92NY.

Clinton expressed concern that Biden’s choice could negatively impact his legacy and the country. Her comments reflect a noticeable shift in the Democratic consensus regarding Biden’s health, especially following remarks from Jill Biden, who indicated fears about her husband’s well-being during a recent debate.

Clinton further criticized Biden, suggesting he broke a promise regarding not running again. She speculated that had she been the candidate instead of Vice President Kamala Harris, she might have stood a better chance against Trump.

She noted, “If he had said back in late summer of ’23 that he wouldn’t run and planned to pass the torch to a new generation, it could have turned into a legitimate campaign.” This statement came after Biden’s withdrawal from the race in late July 2024, following a disastrous debate performance.

Clinton lamented that any candidate—be it the vice president, a governor, or a senator—could have potentially beaten Trump. She viewed Biden’s decision as a significant miscalculation, stating he should have acknowledged his earlier intentions to step down.

Some Democrats who have critiqued Biden believe that his 2024 bid might ensure Trump’s return to office. Interestingly, while Clinton had consistently backed Biden during his campaign, she found herself reevaluating her support as things unfolded. Just a day after Biden’s poor debate performance in June 2024, she reaffirmed her commitment to his campaign on social media, depicting the election as a clear choice between Biden and Trump.

Throughout 2024, Clinton promoted Biden’s re-election, framing it as a fight for fundamental rights and democratic values. In January, she urged supporters to rally behind Biden, emphasizing the importance of protecting democracy and reproductive rights.

As of now, there’s been no response from Biden’s press secretary regarding Clinton’s recent statements.
