Praise for Trump’s Iran Deal
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s agreement with Iran, highlighting it as a significant foreign policy accomplishment and a practical solution to the dilemma of either appeasing Iran or risking U.S. military involvement in another extensive conflict in the Middle East.
In a recent post, Gingrich noted on his website that Trump effectively used economic and military leverage to shift Iran’s stance while also rallying a wide international coalition. He brushed aside critiques from both conservative and liberal circles, claiming many detractors rushed to judgment without fully examining the specifics of the deal.
“Negotiating with Iran, overseeing its commitments, and sometimes resorting to military or economic pressure against authoritarian regimes is a harsh reality,” Gingrich remarked, recalling Ronald Reagan’s “Trust, but verify” principle. “The ongoing demands to regulate and sometimes sanction these religious dictatorships seem never-ending.” He emphasized that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will continuously seek to expand its influence and flexibility, as it’s ingrained in their nature.
Gingrich further defended Trump’s approach, contending that critics formed their opinions without understanding the actual deal and failed to provide viable alternatives.
“Many individuals on both sides of the aisle are quick to criticize the deal before they’ve even seen it,” he stated. “It’s puzzling what they believe the alternative should be.”
He argued that Trump has effectively bridged the divide between the Obama-Biden strategy regarding Iran and avoiding an expensive military intervention, all while preventing Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities.
“President Trump has successfully maneuvered between the appeasement approach of Barack Obama and Joe Biden and a strategy demanding significant ground forces,” Gingrich explained. “He leveraged our nation’s strengths in air power and intelligence to push the religious dictatorship further than past administrations did.”
Additionally, Gingrich commended Trump for his coalition-building initiatives, noting that several countries are aligning with the U.S. to contain the Iranian regime and enhance stability in the region.
“President Trump leads a substantial coalition focused on achieving a more stable Middle East and ready to collaborate despite Iranian provocations,” Gingrich wrote.
Since Gingrich’s remarks, reports indicate that President Trump has formalized an agreement with Iran aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts and laying the groundwork for a comprehensive peace framework. As part of this memorandum, Iran committed to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons, while the U.S. promised to seek sanctions relief and facilitate economic development as talks progress.
