World Cup Chat: Newsom and Trudeau Engaged in Conversation
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were seen having a spirited discussion while enjoying the inaugural match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium.
The two exchanged ideas before the matchup between the United States and Paraguay. Observers noted Trudeau’s animated gestures—at one point, he even raised his hands as if in prayer while conversing with Newsom, who is rumored to be gearing up for a run in the 2028 presidential election.
Trudeau was in Los Angeles, not just for the soccer but also to support his girlfriend, pop star Katy Perry, who performed at the World Cup’s opening ceremony. However, it was his enthusiastic exchanges with Newsom that seemed to steal some of the spotlight, perhaps even as much as the on-field action.
The two appeared quite at ease, watching Team USA as they celebrated a win in front of a vibrant crowd. Their camaraderie underscored a casual but engaging atmosphere amid the sports fervor.
This encounter comes at a time when Newsom is navigating some political challenges. Recently, reports have surfaced indicating that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are under investigation by the Justice Department. In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Newsom characterized this investigation as a politically charged move by the previous Trump administration.
This inquiry reportedly focuses on whistleblower claims concerning Siebel Newsom’s taxes and a distinct corruption case involving Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson. Additionally, revelations have surfaced about Newsom directing over $4.4 million from special interests to the California Partners project, an initiative closely linked to Siebel Newsom.
Despite all this, Newsom has been viewed as a likely Democratic contender for the upcoming 2028 election, although he hasn’t officially declared his candidacy yet.
On another note, Trudeau has faced some criticism for choosing to attend the World Cup game in Los Angeles rather than Canada’s opener in Toronto. In response, he humorously remarked on social media, “Sometimes you have to have an obligation to support your boyfriend. But, you know who I’m rooting for to win the Cup.”
