Mother of Cape Verde’s Goalkeeper Cleared to Attend World Cup Match

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that the mother of Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Bosinha, has received approval to enter the United States for her son’s next World Cup game.

Previously, she couldn’t make it to Bosinha’s first match—a significant draw against Spain—due to visa complications.

After that game, Bosinha expressed his emotions, stating, “I was crying because I grew up with my grandparents. They passed away a few years ago, and my mother couldn’t be there because of the visa problems and the costs involved. We just couldn’t sort it out in time.”

Jeffries took notice of Bosinha’s heartfelt comments. He shared that he spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging the State Department to facilitate her entry for the upcoming match.

Following this advocacy, Bosinha’s mother was informed that arrangements had been made, allowing her to enter the U.S. without any fees.

Jeffries expressed gratitude towards FIFA, Rubio, State Department officials, and the Cape Verdean government for their cooperation in resolving this issue.

In a tweet, he stated, “Cape Verde’s star goalkeeper Vosinha and her mother will be reunited in Miami just in time for Sunday’s game. Thank you to everyone who made this happen.”

Cape Verdeans have faced challenges in obtaining U.S. visas, with fees reaching $15,000 due to past immigration policies. Although President Trump recently eased restrictions for the World Cup ticket holders from Cape Verde and other nations, this came too late for Bosinha’s mother.

Following his impressive seven saves during the draw, Bosinha has rapidly gained fame online, reaching over 13 million followers on Instagram. He and his team will square off against Uruguay this Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
