Concerns Rise Over Newsom’s Presidential Aspirations
Some members of the Democratic Party are expressing worries that the investigation into California Governor Gavin Newsom could hinder his prospects for a presidential bid in 2028.
The unease stems from the possibility that Newsom’s reputation may be damaged before he even officially enters the race, giving Republicans a chance to exploit the allegations and inquiries surrounding him, as reported by hill.
A Democratic strategist mentioned, “No candidate wants to head into what is sure to be a brutal primary season with a weight around their neck.”
On Monday, Newsom claimed that former President Donald Trump had instructed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate both him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, according to Breitbart News.
However, the article highlighted that, regardless of Newsom’s assertions, noted journalist Adam Housley indicated that the investigation started during Joe Biden’s presidency.
The governor also accused Trump of “pursuing” him amid his presidential considerations, asserting that Trump had targeted his wife by labeling her a “public servant.”
In light of this situation, the news about the governor aligns with broader challenges facing Democrats, who are dealing with “deep-rooted internal discord, unresolved strategic debates, and voter skepticism” that could impede their united efforts leading into the 2028 presidential election, as reported by Breitbart News’ Jasmine Jordan earlier this year.
As Democrats enter 2026, there is a renewed hope about flipping the House; nonetheless, significant divisions within the party persist. A report released this week underscores that the Democratic Party still contends with deep splits, divergent ideological approaches, and leadership dilemmas, raising concerns about their ability to unify for the upcoming presidential race despite growing dissatisfaction with Trump’s administration.
In contrast, Republicans are making the most of their economic messaging and cultural victories. Trump’s initiatives in states like Pennsylvania, including executive orders about job growth and related topics, have contributed to rising approval ratings. A December Harvard-Harris poll indicated that Trump led Biden on several critical issues, including support for addressing crime, immigration, and government spending.
Recent polls also reveal that Vice President J.D. Vance (Republican) and former Vice President Kamala Harris (Democratic) hold favorable positions within their parties among potential 2028 candidates.
This week, Trump shared his thoughts on why he believes Democrats are struggling in public opinion polls. He commented on the perceived strengthening of Republicans, referencing notable figures and incidents within the party, including a Democrat candidate in Maine.
