Candidate for Governor Promises to Prevent Sharia Law in Key State with Significant Muslim Community

Michigan Senator Pushes Resolution on Constitutional Supremacy

On Wednesday, Republican Senator Aric Nesbitt from Michigan put forth a resolution that emphasizes the state’s commitment to the supremacy of both the United States Constitution and the Michigan Constitution.

The bill did not receive support from the Democratic majority in the Michigan Senate, who opted to refer it to another committee instead of voting on it. Nesbitt, who is also a candidate for governor, shared a video explaining the day’s events, stating clearly that “Michigan will never recognize, support, or enforce Sharia law.”

The resolution expresses a significant interest in safeguarding citizens from any legal frameworks, ideologies, or foreign influences that could threaten the principles of constitutional supremacy and individual liberty. It reads, “Michigan has a compelling interest in protecting its citizens.”

Nesbitt remarked, “America has one constitution and set of laws. As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, it is embarrassing that Michigan Democrats are not willing to affirm that basic fact. As Michigan’s next governor, I will defend the Constitution and ensure that we will never recognize, support or enforce Sharia law in this state.”

Notably, Michigan has a substantial Muslim community, particularly in Dearborn, which is populated largely by Arab-Americans and has the largest mosque in the nation. The city is also home to Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud.

The Democratic majority in the Michigan Senate did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Nesbitt continued to emphasize the importance of upholding American legal standards, stating, “We will not surrender an inch of our legal system to a foreign ideology, and we will not apologize for defending our sovereignty. We cannot allow our nation to be undermined by a foreign code of law that disrespects American freedoms.”

The idea for the resolution came about following recurring questions and discussions during Nesbitt’s travels around the state, according to a spokesperson.

The resolution also aims to protect Michiganders from the influence of foreign laws and religious norms within public courts. It condemns any organization that might seek to undermine these constitutional protections or engage in violence against the citizens of Michigan and the United States.

Nesbitt is vying for prominence in Michigan’s Republican primary set for August 4, with notable contenders including Congressman John James, former Attorney General Mike Cox, and businessman Perry Johnson.
