Former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, appear to have divergent priorities as they look toward the next phase of their lives.
While Barack describes his future ambitions as “fun,” Michelle seems to have more introspective plans, leading to some backlash on conservative social media channels.
When asked during an interview on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” to sum up her next chapter in one word, Michelle simply stated, “It’s me.” She chuckled when Barack suggested that he valued her response more than his own.
This candid response from the former first lady caught the attention of conservative critics, who were surprised by what they perceived as her somewhat self-centered perspective.
One conservative figure, Steve Guest, expressed his disbelief on social media, calling her statement “selfish” and “entitled.”

Michelle has previously mentioned her feelings of being neglected during Barack’s presidency, recalling a time in 2013 when she felt like a “single mother.”
She also faced criticism for missing notable events, like the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter and President Trump’s inauguration in early 2025, when she chose to be in Hawaii instead.
Some have speculated that there may be underlying tensions in their relationship due to Barack’s political ambitions. He has openly acknowledged the “real tension” it creates within their family, which can be frustrating for Michelle.
On a more positive note, during the opening ceremony of his presidential library, Michelle honored Barack, expressing her admiration and pride in him.
She reflected, “You never fell for the temptation of quick fixes or easy paychecks,” and emphasized how he has continually inspired those around him.
