Michelle Obama Shares Choking Incident
Michelle Obama recently shared an experience where she helped a friend who was choking during a dinner outing.
This revelation came up in a conversation with her brother, Craig Robinson, and comedian Kevin Hart on the IMO podcast, which aired on Wednesday.
As they discussed health concerns, Obama recounted a surprising moment. “I taught one of my girlfriends the Heimlich maneuver over dinner,” she mentioned, catching Robinson off guard.
She clarified that during the meal with her friend’s daughter, Malia Obama, and two of Malia’s friends, a concerning situation unfolded.
“We’re the same age, and you start to have… swallowing issues,” Obama explained. She added that her friend had previously mentioned having esophagus problems that caused food to get stuck.
At one point, Obama noticed the woman standing up and coughing. “I think she coughed something up that got stuck in her throat,” she recalled. When she asked if everything was okay, the woman could only shake her head.
Without any prior experience, Obama moved behind her friend and began performing the Heimlich maneuver. “I had never done it before, but it worked. It came right out,” she said, surprised at how effective it was.
Once the situation was under control, her focus shifted back to her daughter and the two friends at the table, remarking, “What were they all doing?”
In a light-hearted moment, they admitted, “We were useless.” It felt like a moment reserved for their mother.
Hart chimed in, emphasizing that it was more than just a “casual story,” suggesting that this was something worth sharing at any dinner gathering.
To which Obama humorously replied, “Yeah, I saved a life.”
