Stefon Diggs Considers Hometown Team

There might be a chance for Stefon Diggs to end up playing for the Commanders, his hometown team. Diggs, who grew up in Maryland, mentioned that it’s not out of the question for him to join the team in 2026.

“Absolutely,” he stated. “That was one of the first things that crossed my mind when I thought about possibly coming back home. I felt that same rush when I chose the University of Maryland. If it turns out, or if it works out, then yeah, I’m open to it. But we’ll see, we’ll see. I’m not ruling it out.”

Reflecting on his fanbase, Diggs admitted, “I had no clue about the number of fans there were. I frequently returned home until I became a free agent, and everyone kept asking, ‘Are you going back home?’”

Born in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Diggs played for the University of Maryland from 2012 to 2014, racking up 2,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns during his college career, which included two bowl victories.

He was then drafted by the Vikings in 2015, where he spent five seasons, accumulating over 4,500 receiving yards. A highlight of his time in Minnesota was the 2018 playoff game where he scored the iconic game-winning touchdown dubbed the “Minneapolis Miracle.”

Most recently, the 32-year-old played four years with the Bills alongside quarterback Josh Allen, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2020, and a notable 37 touchdowns from 2020 to 2023.

After his stay in Buffalo, Diggs had a year with the Texans in 2024 and then another with the Patriots the following year. However, he faced some legal troubles midway through that season.

Having pleaded not guilty to a battery charge earlier in the offseason, and with no disciplinary action from the NFL, signing with the Commanders as a free agent might actually be a viable option for him.

Meanwhile, the Commanders’ top receiver remains Terry McLaurin, who supports third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels. But there are lingering uncertainties with the rest of the receiver lineup, which includes Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks, Dyami Brown, and Jaylin Lane.

There have been rumors linking 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk to the Commanders, especially since he’s a close friend of Daniels, but so far, the attention on potential player movements has been minimal.

Aiyuk hasn’t played since Week 7 of 2024, contrasting with Diggs, who threw for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns for the AFC champion Patriots in 2025.

As for the Commanders, they’re looking to bounce back after last season’s 5-12 record, with their 2026 opener set for September 13th against the Eagles.
