US Men’s National Soccer Team Faces Australia: Pulisic’s Status Uncertain
As the U.S. men’s national soccer team prepares to face Australia on Friday, coming off a resounding 4-1 win against Paraguay, all eyes are on Christian Pulisic. Will the so-called “Captain America” be able to hit the field at Seattle’s Lumen Field?
Pulisic’s injury has become a major concern amid an otherwise solid tournament start at home. He contributed an assist during the game against Paraguay, but unfortunately had to leave the match early due to a calf issue.
Coaching staff, including manager Mauricio Pochettino, have been tight-lipped regarding Pulisic’s recovery. When pressed about the player’s condition, Pochettino remarked simply, “He is evolving.” He added that Pulisic seems to have improved since last Friday, although further details on his availability for the match remain vague.
“If he’s not ready tomorrow, we think he’ll be good for the next game,” Pochettino mentioned, hinting at hope while maintaining caution.
The coach acknowledged the eagerness of Pulisic to return to the pitch, stating that he’s “working hard to be ready.” Pulisic is slated to meet with the training team on Thursday evening to get clarity on his status.
Pochettino noted, “It’s a fantastic chance for players who have a passion for their country to enjoy the game and help the team win.” Nonetheless, he also recognized the challenge of dealing with injuries, stating that mentally strong players like Pulisic handle these situations well.
Training sessions this week have seen Pulisic participating in modified drills, but he has not fully integrated with the team during public interaction.
While Pochettino hasn’t disclosed who would fill in for Pulisic if he can’t play, adjustments were made during the previous match. Malik Tillman shifted to the left wing, and Sebastian Verhalter moved to midfield in the second half.
“I’ll inform you tomorrow if that decision becomes necessary,” Pochettino said. Meanwhile, the team is weighing various options based on the latest updates.
Regardless, having Pulisic on the field would significantly boost the U.S. team’s chances against Australia. Weston McKennie shared a bit about team morale: “I’m just trying to stay positive and hope he’ll be there tomorrow. He’s pushing himself, and so are the coaches. But honestly, that’s a question for him, not me—I’m in my own little world here.”
With Australia having secured a win against Turkiye in their first World Cup match, this upcoming clash will determine who takes the lead in Group D.
