WWE NXT champion Tony D'Angelo anticipates tricks from Naraku at the Great American Bash

Upcoming Title Defense at the Great American Bash

Tony D’Angelo, the reigning WWE NXT Champion, is gearing up for what could be his toughest challenge yet during his upcoming title defense at the Great American Bash.

Naraku made his NXT debut in May, quickly stating his aim to win the championship. He secured his position as the No. 1 contender by defeating fellow newcomer Mason Luke. The title match between D’Angelo and Naraku is scheduled for June 28th.

In a recent conversation, D’Angelo expressed that he remains alert after a recent encounter with Naraku, who presented him with an unsigned battle contract. D’Angelo put pen to paper but was informed that Naraku still needed to finalize it.

“I mean, a little bit. But I also took it that he might be having second thoughts about himself,” D’Angelo noted. “He might be a little afraid of Tony D. Maybe he hasn’t quite figured out if he really wants to face me.” The champion expected Naraku to be aggressive right off the bat, considering his strong reputation.

Naraku, who previously wrestled under the name Evil in New Japan Pro Wrestling, is a decorated competitor, having held multiple titles including the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. D’Angelo mentioned, “I’m not surprised. He traveled all this way for a reason; of course he’d target the big dog.” He reflected on the mind games Naraku seems to be playing regarding the title.

“I’m still not totally convinced,” D’Angelo said. “The whole situation with the contract; he’s acting a bit sketchy. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.” Given Naraku’s affiliation with the House of Torture, D’Angelo is preparing for tricks during the match.

“I wouldn’t be shocked if something unexpected occurs,” he added. “I’ve had my fair share of dealings in the past, so I know how these things can unfold. It’s wise to expect the unexpected.” The upcoming title match is part of a card featuring several other bouts.

Laura Bice will challenge Kendall Gray for the NXT Women’s Championship, while Miles Bourne faces Tavion Heights for the NXT North American Championship. Len Sinclair will compete for the WWE Women’s Speed Championship, and Saquon Sugars takes on Deion Lennox.

The Great American Bash is set to be notable, as it marks the first NXT premium live event airing exclusively on the CW Network at 8pm ET.

D’Angelo commented on the significance of this event, stating, “I think it’s great. We’re reaching a wider audience. This is crucial not just for WWE, but for NXT too. We’re like a ‘third brand’ and it’s important to showcase emerging talent.”
