Mamdani and Bernie Sanders promote a bold 'movement' at NYC rally

Left-Wing Movement Gaining Momentum in NYC

At a rally Thursday night, Mayor Zoran Mandani and Senator Bernie Sanders spoke passionately about a new radical “movement” emerging to support left-leaning candidates for the House in New York City.

The event, titled “Our Year, Our Team,” drew an enthusiastic crowd to King’s Theater in Flatbush, where supporters rallied behind Mamdani’s endorsed candidates from the Democratic Socialists of America as they prepare for the critical Democratic primary on June 23.

The slate of candidates features challengers to the establishment Democrats, including former NYC Comptroller Brad Lander from the 10th Congressional District, Democratic Socialist State Rep. Claire Valdez from the 7th, and Daliaza Avila Chevalier from the 13th.

Amid cheers, Mamdani emphasized, “The Democratic Party has to change. The parties of the past will not take us to the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone.” This resonated with attendees, many of whom echoed his sentiment.

Looking fresh after the Knicks’ championship parade, Mamdani, donning a Knicks jersey under his suit, urged New Yorkers to support these candidates, drawing on the momentum from November’s landmark mayoral victory.

“This movement isn’t about any one person or election. It’s about shifting away from the influence of big money in politics,” he articulated. “We need to create a government that serves all New Yorkers, not just the privileged few.”

Sanders, a Flatbush native, noted significant progressive victories across the country and stressed the importance of channeling that energy in New York City. “The last eight months have shown major wins for progressive candidates nationwide,” he said. “Why are these candidates succeeding? The American working class is aware that the economic system is rigged.”

He added that the current system mainly benefits the wealthy, leaving working families struggling to make ends meet. The rally included speeches from candidates Valdez, Chevalier, and Lander, who was challenged by U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman. They were introduced by comedian Ilana Glazer and featured a performance by Sara Bareilles.

Valdez’s candidacy, seeking to represent Brooklyn and parts of Queens, has Mamdani’s backing, particularly over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who had planned to step aside for U.S. Rep. Nydia Velasquez. “Unity doesn’t stop at borders,” she declared.

She expressed conviction that the interests of the “war machine” and the wealthy elite are intertwined but not as formidable as they believe. “When workers come together, they can achieve remarkable things,” she proclaimed.

Lander also took aim at establishment Democrats and billionaires, stating, “We have been replicating the actions of corporate Democrats who are out of touch.” He insisted, “This moment requires true unity, not just letters, big fundraisers, or elections influenced by the rich.”
