Courageous NYC boy with sickle cell disease receives special treatment at Knicks finals game

Special Night for a Brave Boy

It was a night to remember, all thanks to the internet.

An 8-year-old boy from Manhattan, who has shown incredible resilience in the face of a debilitating sickle cell disease, enjoyed an unforgettable experience at Monday’s Knicks game, shared his mother with the Post. Marvel Charles Pierre Jr., affectionately known as “MJ,” was filled with joy after winning free tickets to Game 3 of the NBA Finals through the Garden of Dreams program, according to Angelina Rosado.

“The happiness he felt at the game was truly remarkable, especially after all the tears and treatments he’s gone through,” Rosado, 33, from the Lower East Side, expressed. “He just wants to be like any other kid.”

MJ, who is in junior school at PS 15, got the chance to enter early and participate in his team’s pregame warm-up session alongside celebrities in a nearly empty arena.

“He felt like a VIP,” Rosado noted, mentioning that he also received a stylish royal blue Knicks hat.

Since his diagnosis as a baby, MJ has spent numerous days in the emergency room due to his painful condition. However, he was swept up by the electrifying atmosphere when the Knicks faced off against the Spurs, even though they lost by just four points.

“Watching him jump up, scream, and cheer was a moment filled with happiness,” Rosado recounted, sharing a touching montage from the game on her social media. “His face was just glowing.”

“He was shouting things like, ‘Defend!'” she said, reflecting on how the crowd’s energy lifted his spirits.

“As a mother, it was heartwarming to witness that,” Rosado added.

Kids like MJ experience significant pain as their sickle-shaped red blood cells cluster together and hinder proper blood flow. These blockages, known as vaso-occlusive crises, can occur unpredictably, leading to intense pain and inflammation.

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster,” Rosado mentioned, recalling her son’s tough journey, starting with his first crisis at just 11 months old.

“For a mother who had to comfort him through immense pain, seeing him smile like that is priceless,” she reflected.

MJ, a devoted fan of Jalen Brunson, couldn’t contain his excitement during the game, even showing the player’s signature hand gesture. Rosado, who is the executive director of a domestic violence nonprofit, was thrilled when she found out that Bronx-raised rapper Cardi B would make a surprise appearance during halftime.

Although the Knicks fell short to the Spurs by four points, the night was still a win for MJ.

The Garden of Dreams, a nonprofit dedicated to creating “life-changing experiences for young people in need,” collaborated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to secure MJ’s prized ticket.

Representatives from Garden of Dreams shared that they provided approximately 500 tickets for kids to enjoy Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals. If a Game 6 occurs, they plan to give away an additional 250 tickets.

The charity works alongside various organizations, including the Children’s Relief Society, Madison Square Boys & Girls, Scan Harbor, and NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, aiming to grant access to events at the arena for sick and underserved children.
