Brooklyn Father Shot at Knicks Block Party
A Brooklyn father of four, Emmanuel Spencer, 44, was tragically shot and killed shortly after celebrating a historic Knicks victory over the weekend, according to authorities and various reports.
Around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, the NYPD found Spencer on Lincoln Road in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds as he was returning home.
Spencer was rushed to a hospital where, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead. His brother shared that Spencer had been enjoying a good day prior to the incident, stating, “Everyone was free. I watch basketball games and relax.”
“He was a kind man, laid-back and deeply family-oriented,” his brother added. “He cherished time with his daughters, and he was passionate about sports and music.”
Neighbors reported seeing groups of joyful Knicks fans celebrating the NBA Finals championship outside before chaos broke out. One witness recalled hearing about two or three gunshots before the crowd panicked and fled.
Another neighbor described the moment, saying, “I was outside and I heard what I thought were fireworks, then gunshots. I quickly grabbed my child and went inside… There were so many people, and I just can’t comprehend what happened.”
At the scene, abandoned plastic cups from the block party were scattered around, and crime scene tape marked off an area near a barbecue grill.
Sources noted that Spencer had encountered legal issues previously, facing several arrests for robbery and drug-related charges, with his last arrest being in March 2024 for reckless endangerment.
Despite his past, neighbors portrayed Spencer as a calm, friendly figure in the community, someone they respected and loved. “All I know is that the person I loved and respected is no longer here,” reflected Barnett Coburn, 68. “That hurts.”
Wider disturbances followed the Knicks’ NBA title celebration across New York City, with reports of an NYPD car being damaged and a FIFA bus set ablaze in Times Square, resulting in injuries to 10 officers and the arrest of 63 individuals.
Additionally, a 17-year-old was shot in the leg, and four other individuals suffered stab wounds amid the unrest, according to the NYPD.
As of now, no arrests have been made regarding Spencer’s shooting, and the investigation is still ongoing.
