Tarik Skubal’s Future in Question Amidst Tigers’ Struggles
The Detroit Tigers need to turn things around quickly, or they might lose their ace, Tarik Skubal. The pitcher, who will soon be a free agent, has indicated that if the team continues to falter, roster changes are on the horizon.
Skubal mentioned that the last-place team’s current performance demands improvement, stating, “In real life situations, we need to play better baseball.” He expressed his unwavering belief in his teammates but stressed that a lack of progress could lead to significant changes, as the front office might reconsider their trajectory.
“If they don’t see us as a playoff or World Series-caliber team, the whole team is going to look different,” he added, acknowledging the bleak reality many feel in the organization. The Tigers, with a disappointing 30-44 record, are struggling significantly, sharing one of the weakest standings in the league.
Earlier this offseason, Detroit decided against trading Skubal, hoping to capitalize on his skills while they still had a shot at the playoffs. However, the team’s current state may leave them with no option but to consider moving him.
Despite holding onto Skubal, the future seems uncertain. FanGraphs predicts the team’s playoff chances to be just 15.4 percent. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be any ongoing discussions for a long-term deal, which raises questions about retaining him as a free agent.
With the August 3 trade deadline approaching, Skubal is likely to attract interests from several teams looking to bolster their pitching staff. His performance this season—strong enough, with a 3-3 record and a 2.81 ERA—shows he has value, especially after returning from elbow surgery.
“The future, not only for me but for many people in this room, could look very different in two months,” Skubal remarked, emphasizing the urgency they all feel. The upcoming series against the division-leading White Sox could be pivotal. Facing formidable opponents is never easy, and the pressure is on for the Tigers to perform.
Ultimately, while Skubal is focused on pushing through and maintaining control over their fate, it’s clear that both he and the team are in a precarious position. A sense of urgency is definitely necessary, although panic isn’t the goal. The Tigers must strive to win—after all, the clock is ticking.
