Pro Wrestling Star Austin Aries Sets Sights on Championship
Austin Aries, a notable figure in professional wrestling, is gearing up for a significant match. He will face Blue Panther for the Major League Wrestling (MLW) U.S. Openweight Championship this Saturday night at MLW Fusion, marking a major moment since his return to the ring.
In a recent conversation, Aries expressed his intention to retire the title after the match, emphasizing his respect for Blue Panther and his long career. “I mean, that’s the plan. I’m 48 and still competing at a high level, but then there’s Blue Panther at 65, still taking risks,” Aries noted. His admiration for the veteran wrestler extends beyond just accolades; it’s about the commitment to the sport even at an older age.
Aries acknowledged the bittersweet nature of potentially defeating Blue Panther, saying, “That’s just how it goes. Being a champion means there’s a target on your back.” He’s aiming to call his potential new title the World Openweight Championship, showcasing his ambition to prove himself on an international scale. “Winning against Blue Panther would position me as one of the pillars of MLW,” he mentioned, indicating his eagerness to solidify his place in the organization.
After his ring return last year against Paul London at Slaughterhouse, Aries has been preparing for the new season, most recently facing Trevor Lee. Initially testing his physical limits, Aries found a renewed sense of purpose in returning to full-time wrestling. “It was a real test to see where I am physically. I felt good and ready to give it a go at a high level,” he explained. Despite facing challenges after a period away, including some potential ring rust, his competitive spirit drives him to continue. “I know the day will come when that window closes,” he reflected, grateful for being relatively injury-free over his 26-year career.
As for MLW itself, Aries believes it stands out among wrestling promotions, noting its accessibility and free viewing options. “MLW is unique in that there are various platforms where you can watch it for free. It’s hard to find quality content without paying these days,” he said. He highlighted how fans can catch new episodes on platforms like YouTube and emphasized the affordability of live events, making it accessible for families.
With a diverse roster featuring talents from Mexico, Japan, and recognized names like Killer Kross and Matt Riddle, Aries feels MLW appeals to a wide audience. He remarked, “What’s great about MLW is how we present pro wrestling authentically. We have a good mix of talent, including rising stars and legends like Blue Panther.” There’s something for every wrestling fan, he concluded, showcasing his excitement for the promotion’s future.
