Colleague in MLB criticizes the firing of Penguins reporter Hailey Hunter

Robbie Inkmicoski, an MLB field reporter based in Pittsburgh, has passionately come to the defense of Haley Hunter after she separated from Sportsnet Pittsburgh earlier this month.

This week, Inkmicoski expressed his thoughts in a series of posts on X, suggesting that the decision seemed like an intentional move by someone wishing to see Hunter leave the network. “Imagine spending your life striving for your dream job, only to have it disrupted!” he shared. He emphasized, “You’re great at what you do, and people around you know it. (I know many who work closely with Haley, and not once have I heard anything negative about her!)”

In another candid moment, he reflected on the challenges of relocating for work, mentioning how he’s experienced that discomfort multiple times himself. “You uproot your life, and even your partner’s life. You buy a house, call a new city home, and it takes time to really adjust!” he commented. The abrupt end of her position felt, to him, unjustified and unexpected.

Hunter, whose father is former Penguins player Tim Freinwich, confirmed the split shortly after her marriage, noting, “Unfortunately, I’ve learned that the Penguins want to take the role in a different direction.” She mentioned that they hadn’t received specific details, but understood it was a personal matter.

In late posts, Inkmicoski described the entire situation as unsettling. He later clarified that his intention was to advocate for Hunter, stating, “She deserves better—plain and simple!” He recounted having faced similar frustrations in his own career, as challenges often arise behind the scenes for many who aspire to such roles.

He made it clear that his outspokenness is about supporting those who might not have a voice for various reasons. “You may agree or disagree with me, but thankfully we can speak freely in this country!” he added, with a light-hearted touch.

In another post, Inkmicoski expressed disappointment over people losing their dream jobs without cause. Hunter, who had also covered the Pittsburgh Pirates, spent three years with Sportsnet since joining their broadcast team for the 2023-24 season. She also contributes to the Golf Channel.

Sportsnet Pittsburgh has announced plans to begin a nationwide search for a rink-side reporter to replace Hunter.
