Obama Presidential Center Emphasizes Bold Design

CHICAGO — A key figure in the design of the Barack Obama Presidential Center has shared insights on the project’s vision. According to structural engineer Chris Byrd, based in Washington, D.C., the goal was to create something unmistakably bold, reflecting the essence of the 44th president.

Byrd, who designed the tower’s upper section, explained that it features quotes from President Obama’s speeches during his two terms. A total of 91 words wrap around a corner of the structure, giving it a distinct appearance that has drawn both admiration and criticism. There are 433 letters in total, each standing at approximately 5 feet tall.

“Collaborating with design architects and graphic designers was quite unprecedented,” Byrd remarked, adding that he believes there’s nothing comparable in architecture.

Public Reception at the Opening

At the recent public opening, which attracted thousands to the 19.3-acre campus, visitors described the design as “astounding,” “breathtaking,” and “unique.” However, some online critics have used harsher terms like “terrible insult for architecture” and “a concrete nightmare.”

Byrd, unfazed by backlash, expressed satisfaction with the final product. He believes it effectively anchors the area and integrates well into the surrounding park. “It’s not just the buildings; the landscape architecture is remarkable,” he said.

During the opening, he noticed emotional responses from attendees. “People were smiling and even tearing up. It seems everyone discovers something about themselves here. It feels special,” Byrd reflected.

He rejected the notion of the building being termed a “monster.” The tower, according to Byrd, is a beautiful addition to the park, designed to complement the height of nearby structures. “This isn’t a monster; it’s a grand gesture and a bold statement,” he asserted.
