President Donald Trump recently mocked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, suggesting she asked him repeatedly for photos at the G7 summit in France. He also criticized her for not supporting the U.S. in its war against Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, he stated, “Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni repeatedly asked for photos with me during the G7 meeting in France.” This echoed comments he made to the Italian media the day before.
Meloni responded to Trump’s accusations, telling Reuters they were “completely made up,” and expressed her astonishment at his behavior towards an ally. “I don’t understand why the president of the United States would act this way,” she remarked.
Following the G7 summit, Trump took to social media to chastise Meloni for not providing assistance to the U.S. during the Iran conflict, which had escalated several months prior. He remarked, “Despite her popularity, she has not done well in Italy, perhaps because she turned down the United States.” He criticized her refusal to allow U.S. troops access to Italian airbases, calling it a “huge logistical inconvenience.”
Italy had previously denied the use of a Sicilian airbase for U.S. military planes involved in operations against Iran. Trump has continuously expressed frustration with various NATO allies, including Italy, Britain, Germany, and France, for what he perceives as inadequate military support.
He added, “Even though the United States spends hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect Italy and other so-called NATO allies, Italy refuses to help.” Trump concluded his message, suggesting Meloni was only interested in re-establishing friendship after the U.S. had achieved military victories.
Shortly after Trump’s comments, Meloni took to Instagram to decry his “senseless” and “constant” attacks. She claimed her popularity doesn’t depend on her relationship with him but rather on her commitment to Italy’s national interests.
Meloni noted, “Italy is still a sovereign country. My popularity is not your concern. I suggest you focus on your own.”
Despite once having strong ties, their relationship began to strain with Trump’s imposition of tariffs and his recent criticisms of Pope Leo’s foreign policy regarding Iran. Meloni publicly rebuked Trump’s comments about the Pope, labeling them “unacceptable.”
As for Italy’s involvement, Meloni has firmly stated, “Italy is not participating and will not participate” in the war against Iran. She has advocated for a diplomatic approach to addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a topic on which she has generally maintained a critical stance.
Amid renewed fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, U.S.-Iran negotiations, intended to address military hostilities, have been postponed. These talks are expected to resume following a ceasefire in the region.
One crucial aspect of the recent agreement involves halting military operations across various fronts, which underscores the complexity of the ongoing geopolitical situation.
