Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz Over Claims of Israeli Ceasefire Breaches

On Saturday, Iran declared it would close the Strait of Hormuz, citing an Israeli attack on Lebanon that, according to Tehran, breached a newly implemented ceasefire.

The Israeli airstrikes reportedly occurred shortly after a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect at 4 PM local time last Friday. The Lebanese Civil Defense Agency confirmed this information, noting fatalities from the strike. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has since warned vessels against attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, as per Iranian state media.

Iran accused Israel of violating an agreement with the United States that aimed for an immediate end to hostilities involving Iran, Lebanon, and U.S. allies.

Meanwhile, Israel alleged that Hezbollah launched over 50 projectiles at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. This information was shared by an unnamed Israeli military official.

Benjamin Friedman, Director of Defense Priorities, remarked that Israel seems inclined to continue its offensive against Hezbollah, potentially undermining the ceasefire. “They’re pressing for conflict,” he said, “even at the risk of harming the global economy.”

The Lebanese Civil Defense reported that the strikes resulted in 16 deaths and 12 injuries. More than 4,000 people are reported to have died in Lebanon since early March, per the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Furthermore, over 1.2 million have been displaced, as noted by the Associated Press. Israel has seen 32 soldiers and four civilians killed since the violence escalated.

No immediate responses have been received from various U.S. and Israeli officials regarding these developments.

Iran stated its closure of the Strait of Hormuz is a reaction to “crimes” committed by what it labels the “Zionist regime,” as well as perceived breaches of U.S. commitments to ensure a ceasefire.

Friedman suggested that the U.S. should consider cutting aid and military support to Israel if it doesn’t adhere to the ceasefire conditions.

The reported violation of the ceasefire comes at a pivotal moment in ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations to resolve the conflict, with Vice President J.D. Vance indicating a potential forthcoming trip to Switzerland for further talks.

Vance mentioned on Saturday, “I plan to depart for Switzerland soon,” emphasizing the complexities of diplomatic negotiations.

Reports indicate Switzerland continues to be a neutral ground for discussions regarding the U.S.-Iran understanding that emphasizes Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Just a day before the airstrike, Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, made incendiary comments suggesting severe actions against Lebanon in response to ongoing conflicts.

Ben Gvir’s remarks included threats to cause significant harm, claiming, “Every tear shed by an Israeli mother should be matched by tears from Lebanese mothers.”

Despite violating policies against calls for violence, his post remained on social media, underscoring a divide within Israeli politics regarding engagement with Lebanon.

Friedman pointed out that figures like Ben Gvir exist within the Israeli government who appear more interested in conflict than seeking concessions, potentially alienating U.S. support.

President Donald Trump and Vance recently cautioned Israeli leadership to heed U.S. calls for de-escalation in the region.

Trump suggested that a softer approach might be beneficial, noting that minor incidents could avoid broader destruction.

Vance highlighted Trump’s unique position as a global ally for Israel, reflecting on potential repercussions if Israel does not adjust its military strategy.

Earlier this year, Trump brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, although it did not hold for long, with significant loss of life preceding the agreement.

In a previous G7 summit, Trump expressed concerns over Israel’s handling of its conflict with Hezbollah, emphasizing a need for more decisive action to avoid further issues in Lebanon.
