UK Medical Trial of Puberty Blockers to Include Young Children

Girls as young as 11 are poised to participate in a medical trial for puberty blockers in the UK, even though the government had banned these drugs for minors in 2024.

On Friday, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that the Pathways transgender medical trial, which had been suspended since February, is set to resume in August.

This trial in London will administer puberty blockers to 11-year-old girls and 12-year-old boys to investigate their effects, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.

In 2024, Labour Party health secretary Wes Streeting halted the use of these drugs for children under 18, labeling the methods of their administration to minors as a “scandal.”

This decision came after a review by pediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass, who remarked that the evidence supporting these treatments was “built on shaky foundations,” suggesting that the NHS should cease prescribing them.

However, Dr. Cass’s findings did allow for the possibility of administering these potentially life-altering drugs to children, but only within the framework of a medical trial.

Earlier this year, Dr. Cass emphasized to the BBC that it is “crucially important” to conduct trials of puberty blockers in children under 16. She warned that failing to do so could result in unqualified individuals distributing inappropriate medications.

Dr. Cass noted that while some individuals struggle with their biological sex, a career in medicine may be their pathway to a fulfilling life. The reasons behind this are unclear, but support for these individuals is necessary, she argued.

Conversely, critics like Claire Coutinho have condemned the upcoming trial, claiming that young children are incapable of consenting to the potential irreversible changes to their bodies. She has urged the public to sign a petition to stop the trial.

Coutinho reflected on the matter, stating, “Remember yourself when you were 11 years old.” She insisted that no young child can truly understand the ramifications of these drugs, including loss of fertility, sexual function, and bone density, which could lead to serious lifelong effects.
