Pope Leo calls on the patron saint of immigrants amid rising tension with Trump

Pope Leo Focuses on Immigration During Visit

On Saturday, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of immigration during an evening prayer in Sant’Angelo Rodigiano, the birthplace of Francesca Cabrini, America’s first saint. He remarked, “What could be more relevant today than the charism of a missionary dedicated to the service of immigrants?” This sentiment aligns with his ongoing focus on immigration, which has led to a series of public exchanges with President Trump regarding immigration policies.

While praying at Cabrini’s tomb, Leo encouraged young Catholics to reflect on the life of a saint who aided many immigrants seeking better lives. He even referenced his predecessor, Pope Francis, highlighting a shared commitment to supporting immigrants. “Ask yourself,” Leo said. “What would Mother Francesca’s missionary spirit say today?” He suggested that Francis, who has deep roots in the immigrant experience himself, would likely advocate for similar principles.

Leo’s recent travels have included a visit to the Canary Islands in Spain, where he met with migrants and urged leaders to create “legal and safe routes” for those fleeing difficult circumstances. His advocacy has often sparked criticism from Trump, who has accused the Pope of intertwining politics with religious matters. This criticism reflects broader tensions between the Vatican and the Trump administration.

During his visit, Leo highlighted the legacy of Cabrini, a naturalized U.S. citizen known for her decades-long service to Italian immigrants through schools and hospitals. Cabrini passed away in Chicago in 1917, but her impact endures. Leo’s comments come amid rising concerns about the treatment of migrants, a topic central to his message and that of the U.S. Catholic bishops, who have expressed alarms over deportations and their societal effects.

Looking ahead, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo will visit Lampedusa on July 4. This island has become a significant site for migration issues in Europe, serving as a focal point for many attempting to cross from North Africa. Lampedusa also holds symbolic relevance for the Church, as it was the first location Pope Francis visited outside Rome after his election in 2013.
