Recent Shootings in Chicago Result in Multiple Casualties
In a span from Friday to Saturday night in Chicago, at least 27 individuals were shot, with five of them succumbing to their injuries—this is notable considering the city’s strict gun regulations.
Reports indicate that around 11 p.m. on Friday, 13 people were injured in a drive-by shooting in the Princeton Park neighborhood. According to police, two assailants in a red SUV opened fire into a crowd.
Fortunately, none of the 13 injured have been reported dead.
A separate incident occurred early Friday at around 5:15 a.m., when a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times while standing on the sidewalk in the 11900 block of South Michigan Avenue. He later died in the hospital.
Additionally, a 33-year-old man was found shot in Little Village at 8:55 p.m. and died upon reaching the hospital.
Just before 10 p.m. Friday, another man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest in Austin and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Shortly afterward, at around 11 p.m., a 50-year-old man was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest in Grand Crossing and also died at the hospital.
Later, at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, a 37-year-old was fatally shot in the neck in Bridgeport.
Chicago, mirroring the rest of Illinois, has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation. These laws include red flag regulations, a prohibition on specific “assault weapons,” restrictions on “high-capacity” magazines, a mandatory 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, and a requirement for a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card. Residents must also obtain a concealed carry permit for self-defense purposes, and there are specific laws for gun storage.
Moreover, the Cook County ban adds another layer to the “assault weapons” prohibition, which also includes the ban on “high-capacity” magazines. Additionally, self-defense firearms are not allowed on public transport within the city.
Despite these extensive laws and safety measures, the violence continues, with at least 27 people shot over the recent weekend.
