Survey: The Majority of Democrats Believe Unauthorized Immigrants Should Stay in the U.S. and Later Seek Citizenship

Survey Reveals Views on Illegal Immigration in the U.S.

A recent survey indicates that a significant majority of Democrats believe individuals in the U.S. illegally should be allowed to stay and eventually apply for citizenship. Conducted by economist/YouGov, the investigation asked respondents, “Which statement most closely matches your view regarding illegal immigrants living in the United States?”

Results showed that 73% of Democrats support allowing illegal immigrants to remain and pursue citizenship. In contrast, only 10% think they should stay without a path to citizenship, and just 6% feel they should be deported. On the Republican side, 78% believe that these individuals should be deported, while only 11% agree with the more lenient stance of allowing them to stay and apply for citizenship. Interestingly, 46% of independents align with Democrats on this issue, advocating for the same path to citizenship.

Overall, the poll revealed that 43% of respondents support allowing illegal immigrants to stay and pursue citizenship, whereas 39% think they should be deported, 6% agree they can stay but shouldn’t become citizens, and 11% remain undecided.

The survey was conducted from June 13-15, 2026, involving 1,403 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points.

As the Trump administration deals with the ramifications of previous open border policies, Democratic support for keeping undocumented immigrants in the country is becoming more pronounced, especially amid ongoing reports of serious issues arising from this stance.

For instance, last week, the Department of Justice announced charges against 15 individuals, including 11 illegal aliens, linked to a welfare fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded Massachusetts of $1.4 million in food stamps and other benefits.

Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported the arrest of Aureliano Antonio Melendez Reyes, an illegal alien from El Salvador, who is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in Long Island, New York.
