Teenager Arrested after Car Chase Ends in Shooting
A young driver, 18-year-old Jayden Mendoza, was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly striking an NYPD sergeant with a stolen car during a chase that took place over the weekend. This event culminated in Mendoza being shot by the officer involved.
Mendoza now faces attempted murder charges, as he reportedly rammed into police officers when they encircled the stolen vehicle in the Bronx Sunday night, according to statements from New York City police.
Also involved was Angel Robles, a 20-year-old passenger who jumped from the silver Kia just before it was stopped. He was arrested the next day for possessing a loaded firearm.
The police cited that a license plate reader had flagged the stolen Kia with New Jersey plates around 5:35 p.m. on Saturday while it was in Washington Heights.
The NYPD’s Community Response Team discreetly tracked the car and eventually halted it in front of a building on East Fordham Street. Officers approached the vehicle and urged Mendoza to exit.
However, instead of complying, Mendoza responded by backing into an unmarked police car and multiple officers. He then accelerated, hitting the sergeant and sending him tumbling to the ground. In the aftermath, another officer, trying to prevent a collision, shot Mendoza as he attempted to reverse toward them. He remains hospitalized.
Several officers involved in the incident, including the injured sergeant, were transported to a hospital, where they are reportedly in stable condition.
Interestingly, Mendoza had previous arrests and was charged with multiple felonies related to a shooting incident earlier this year.
