Democratic primary victor in NY-17 to face Rep. Mike Lawler in 2026

Rep. Mike Lawler: Democrats are ‘abandoning’ the values that made America strong and free

Rep. Mike Lawler (RN.Y.) voiced concerns about the increasing anti-Israel sentiment within the Democratic Party. He pointed out that numerous Jewish Democrats are feeling politically isolated. Lawler’s remarks included mentions of controversial candidates like Graham Platner, who faced backlash due to Nazi-related tattoos, and Adam Hamawi, criticized for links to figures associated with the 1993 World Trade Center bombings. According to Lawler, Democrats are straying away from the foundational values that upheld America’s strength and freedom.

In another development, Kate Conley, a U.S. Army veteran, emerged victorious from a competitive primary in New York’s 17th Congressional District. This sets her up for a significant general election contest against Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, a race that could influence the balance of power in the House.

Conley managed to outperform four other Democratic candidates to secure her nomination and will go head-to-head with Lawler in November. Lawler, who has served two terms and is a supporter of former President Donald Trump, previously criticized Conley regarding her involvement during the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, highlighting her role on Biden’s National Security Council at the time.

The Hudson Valley region is one of the nation’s most competitive Congressional battlegrounds, and it offers major endorsement opportunities for Democrats. Both national parties and outside organizations are expected to invest heavily in this race, which is pivotal for retaining a House majority in the closing years of Trump’s presidency.

In the Democratic primary, five candidates emerged, each representing different political views and support bases. Conley and Rockland County Councilwoman Beth Davidson were the leading figures in terms of fundraising and polling as Election Day approached. Another candidate, Tarrytown City Supervisor Effie Phillips Staley, leaned more progressive and gained traction among left-leaning groups and voters. Additionally, attorney Mike Sacks and Air Force veteran John Capello participated in the primary.

New York’s 17th District features a diverse political landscape, stretching across parts of four counties. It encompasses wealthy suburban areas in northern Westchester, home to politically notable figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as less affluent regions populated by various immigrant communities, such as Spring Valley in Rockland County. The district’s mix of reliable Democratic regions and strong Republican enclaves has turned it into an unpredictable political arena, where Lawler has often defied expectations.

Lawler first secured his seat in 2022 and successfully ran for reelection in 2024, establishing a reputation as a formidable Republican in this swing district. While Republicans highlight his bipartisan accomplishments and voter-centered policies, Democrats believe the district’s makeup gives them a solid chance of reclaiming the seat.

With Conley’s primary success, the stage is set for what is anticipated to be an expensive and highly visible House race in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
