A New Wave of Democrats Emerges as Far-Left Candidates Surge in Primaries

Former Libertarian presidential candidate Austin Petersen has shared insights about the rising presence of Democratic Socialist candidates in New York’s latest primary elections, where NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani is throwing his weight behind them. Petersen expressed that the Democratic establishment appears “clearly horrified” by these developments, interpreting it as a strategic plan from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

State Representative Claire Valdez, backed by Mamdani, emerged victorious in a competitive primary for New York’s 7th Congressional District, thereby securing the Democratic nomination.

Leading in polls, the Democratic Socialists triumphed over notable figures like Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, City Councilmember Julie Wong, and civil rights attorney Vihar Kumar, to fill the void left by Representative Nydia Velasquez, who opted out after more than three decades in Congress.

In a statement from his campaign website, Mayor Mamdani commended Valdez for her support during his mayoral bid and her alignment with his progressive vision.

“Claire Valdez has stood by me from the very beginning. She knows how to bring about change by empowering the community, raising expectations, and serving working people,” Mamdani stated. “Coming from the labor movement, she understands how to translate struggles into significant advances on issues like housing, healthcare, and workers’ rights. That’s the type of ally I need in Congress, and I’m proud to back her.”

Valdez’s predecessor, Velasquez, also backed Mamdani’s campaign but has taken issue with his endorsement of Valdez over Reynoso.

“Honeymoons are brief, so it’s vital for people to focus on what needs to be accomplished,” Velasquez remarked, pointing to potential conflicts arising from the mayor’s involvement.

Valdez has made no secret of her critical stance on Israel and her calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She advocates for expanding universal healthcare, raising taxes on the wealthy, increasing affordable housing, and fortifying labor unions.

“This district is not merely in search of strongly worded statements; it seeks a genuine economic vision to win back the working class from Trumpism,” her campaign asserted.

Progressives are celebrating a “shockwave” with Valdez’s advancement in the political landscape, as various socialists rally around her campaign. At a recent Brooklyn gathering featuring candidates supported by New York’s DSA chapter, controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker hailed Valdez and other progressive figures as “giants” in the socialist movement.

Piker conveyed, “We used to think we were far from socialism. While we might still be, we’ve never had such a chance to shift things.” He also hinted at what could be a significant win for the socialist agenda in upcoming elections, implying that Mamdani might fade into the background as more diverse and strong candidates emerge in New York City and throughout the state.
