Political Shifts in New York: Mamdani’s Influence and Trump’s Gains

Zoran Mamdani, the socialist mayor of New York City, has stirred the political pot once more.

A year after his surprising triumph in the Democratic primary for mayor—an event that sent shockwaves across the nation—Mamdani pushed the boundaries of his political power again.

This time, he successfully helped elect three far-left candidates in the primaries who took down more moderate incumbents and challengers, shaking up the Democratic establishment.

Mamdani emerged as a major victor on Tuesday, though President Donald Trump also made his mark across primaries and runoffs in New York, Maryland, Utah, and South Carolina.

Democratic Party Moves Leftward

One of Mamdani’s most remarkable victories occurred in New York’s 13th Congressional District. There, his candidate, Dalializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old community organizer and democratic socialist, narrowly edged out the incumbent, Adriano Espaillat, a long-standing representative who has significant influence within the party.

Espaillat, 71, had the backing of many Democratic leaders, including Governor Cathy Hochul, but it wasn’t enough.

Another Major Win for Mamdani’s Allies

In another closely watched race, state Representative Claire Valdez, who shares Mamdani’s alignment with the Democratic Socialists, decisively defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by a significant margin. Reynoso had been supported by retiring Democratic Rep. Nydia Velasquez, but still lost by over 20 points.

“Tonight, we didn’t just win an election,” Valdez proclaimed in an uplifting victory speech. “We declared that this movement is permanent and will only continue to grow.” She spoke of a future where workers have more agency, not just seats at the table.

A third candidate, progressive Brad Lander, also claimed victory over incumbent Dan Goldman. Interestingly, Lander had initially run against Mamdani in the previous Democratic primary but ultimately became one of his prominent allies.

Chevalier, Valdez, and Lander have all embraced the mayor’s focus on affordability in a city known for its high living costs. They’ve also been vocal critics of Israel, raising eyebrows in some circles.

Mamdani’s Risky Gamble

After backing candidates whose past statements have sparked controversy, Mamdani’s move was seen as a significant gamble—especially given his short tenure as mayor. Yet he emerged from the primaries as a bold kingmaker within the party.

He campaigned vigorously for all three candidates, insisting that the Democratic Party “must change.” At a celebration for Valdez, he expressed hopes for a new political direction that would focus on the needs of working people.

California congressman Ro Khanna noted that these results indicate a changing landscape within the party.

However, the outcomes also give Republicans new ammunition to paint Mamdani as a radical, which they are likely to leverage in the upcoming midterm elections.

Republicans Critique Mamdani’s Influence

A spokesperson from the National Republican Congressional Committee weighed in, stating that the night represented a capitulation of the Democratic establishment to Mamdani and the left-wing of the party.

Trump’s Continued Influence

Meanwhile, former President Trump also saw success during the New York primaries. He endorsed Anthony Constantino, a newcomer and businessman, who defeated a more established candidate in a key Republican race.

In South Carolina, Trump’s influence was even more significant. He had previously endorsed both candidates in a high-stakes gubernatorial runoff. Ultimately, state Attorney General Alan Wilson triumphed over Lt. Governor Pamela Evett.

With a crowded field in the primary, Wilson emerged victorious in the runoff, buoyed by Trump’s last-minute support. He acknowledged, in a victory speech, that Trump’s endorsement recognized the vigor and fight in Wilson’s campaign.
