Former President Trump expressed his concerns that New York could become “much worse” after two socialist candidates backed by Mayor Zoran Mamdani won the Democratic congressional primary in the city.
He shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating, “Many communists are running in deeply failed blue states. They seem to be doing quite well against one another in the polls. Unfortunately, history shows that the conditions in the states they will lead will likely deteriorate further.”
In another post early Wednesday, Trump declared, “Beautiful America will never become a communist country!!!”
Trump’s remarks came after state Rep. Claire Valdez won decisively against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, and in a surprising turn of events, former Mamdani campaign staffer Dalializa Avila Chevalier defeated Adriano Espaillat, who has held office for five terms.
Valdez and Chevalier are now positioned in heavily Democratic districts, making it almost certain they’ll be part of the House when the 120th Congress convenes in January.
Currently, there are only two members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in Congress: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.).
Both candidates campaigned on an anti-Israel platform, advocating for a complete divestment from Israeli companies and halting sales of American weapons to Israel.
Valdez has also pushed for seizing properties from landlords. Meanwhile, Chevalier has stated that he believes criminal illegal aliens should not face deportation and has been hesitant to condemn Hamas’s October 7th terrorist attack on Israel.
The New York State DSA also had a successful evening, with seven of the eight endorsed candidates winning, boosting their representation in Albany from nine to fourteen.
In a related contest, former city auditor Brad Lander, another anti-Israel candidate, defeated Representative Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th Congressional District by a significant margin, further solidifying Mamdani’s influence in city politics.
Trump celebrated Goldman’s defeat, expressing his pleasure in a Truth Social post, noting, “Weak, pathetic Sen. Dan Goldman just lost, no big deal! Maybe people didn’t like him for illegally targeting President Trump. Either way, this individual is finally gone!”
