Surprising count of teenagers caught under curfew enforcement in California city

A significant number of teenagers have been apprehended in a California town, prompting local authorities to impose a curfew for minors after a wave of criminal activity.

The Fresno Police Department announced a two-week “Summer Crime Suppression Operation” set to begin on June 10, aiming to tackle risky traffic incidents, curb violent crime, and maintain a safe environment for the youth during summer.

Officials reported that this initiative, called Operation Safe Summer, yielded positive results.

During late-night enforcement of the city’s curfew, authorities made numerous arrests, including the safe return of 228 minors to their families.

In this initiative, 228 parents were also informed about the curfew law, in addition to the minors being sent home.

In a statement, the department emphasized, “The safety of the juveniles was our foremost concern, and there were no administrative actions taken.” The boys were simply returned to their guardians, who were educated about the city’s curfew regulations.

The police expressed gratitude to parents for their collaboration, highlighting that all juveniles were safely returned without becoming victims of crime.

This enforcement targeted children under 18 and occurred nightly from 10 PM to 5 AM.

However, despite this effort, incidents of teen crime continue. Authorities are investigating a shooting that took place on Tuesday night in an apartment complex in northwest Fresno.

Officers discovered 19-year-old Edgar Hernandez inside the apartment with apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to CRMC for treatment but later succumbed to injuries.

A 13-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in relation to the shooting.

In another case, a stabbing incident involving a teenage boy near Sunnyside High School is under investigation. Police responded early Wednesday morning to find a boy with a stab wound to the chest, who was then transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition.

A 17-year-old has been arrested regarding this incident.

This curfew enforcement coincided with the hospitalization of a 17-year-old boy from a stabbing in Fresno, as previously reported.

Authorities mentioned that the victim and his brother were uncooperative with law enforcement, leaving many details about the incident unclear.

As the investigation is ongoing, no arrests have yet been made in this case.

Over the two weeks of the operation, Fresno police made over 560 arrests, comprising 260 felonies and 306 misdemeanors. They also apprehended 87 gang members and confiscated 38 firearms, conducting hundreds of parole and probation searches that led to multiple arrests.

Additionally, officers performed around 3,000 traffic and pedestrian stops, issuing nearly 1,000 citations.

The department noted that, due to these proactive measures, homicide rates have stabilized, with a reported 10% decline in shootings since the start of the year.
