Rubio’s Warning to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz
In Washington, Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Iran on Thursday to “abandon any illusions” regarding plans to charge fees for ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that such actions could threaten any peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
Some Iranian officials are reportedly looking into ways to charge merchant ships, potentially by requiring them to secure insurance.
Rubio expressed his views, saying, “A toll is essentially a toll, regardless of what name you give it. If you’re paying to pass through, it’s a toll—let’s be clear.” He stated this while speaking to reporters in Bahrain, adding that the proposal isn’t feasible.
He elaborated on the serious implications of such actions, noting, “If a ship refuses to pay, the consequences aren’t like receiving a ticket. It could lead to drastic measures. If one ship is sunk, others won’t dare to move.” He stressed the need to reject the idea entirely.
Recently, under an agreement signed by President Trump, Iran consented to safe passage through the strait for a period of 60 days without charges. However, uncertainties remain regarding the arrangements post this initial timeframe.
Rubio remarked, “It’s pretty straightforward: whether you label it a toll or a fee, if you’re charging for passage through the Strait, the U.S. won’t allow it or support it.”
Furthermore, he reiterated that while the U.S. aims for a diplomatic solution, it will not sacrifice its principles, stating, “An agreement is desirable, but not at any cost.”
In another development, President Trump expressed anger over a recent Senate decision that aimed to limit Iran’s military actions under the War Powers Act. This vote was viewed as a move to alleviate tensions but didn’t change the existing war powers resolution.
During a lunch meeting with Senate Republicans, Trump reportedly vented his frustrations over the War Powers Resolution, concerned it might weaken his negotiating power with Tehran. Some sources noted that tensions flared when Trump got into a heated exchange with Senator Bill Cassidy.
After the Senate shifted its vote on Iran, Trump tweeted, “Wow! The Senate changed its vote on Iran from 50-48 to 50-47,” thanking fellow Republicans for their support and underscoring that this decision would serve as a warning to Iran.
