Texas Border Official Arrested in Mexico After Years on the Run
A Texas border county official, Omar Guerrero, who has been evading law enforcement since 2013, was captured this week in Tulum, Mexico. He will be returned to Texas to face charges related to child sexual abuse.
Guerrero was apprehended with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service, as confirmed by both the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office. He had been a fugitive for almost 13 years.
From 2004 to 2006, Guerrero served as the district clerk for Hidalgo County but lost his bid for reelection after getting arrested on drug charges. He attempted to escape law enforcement at that time, but was eventually caught in Mexico after two months on the run.
Following his earlier troubles, he was arrested again in 2013, this time facing charges of illegal possession of drugs and firearms. A judge set his bail at over $1 million, inciting local backlash. After posting bail, he was released, but the situation escalated when authorities initiated an investigation into an alleged sexual abuse case involving a minor who had been lured to his home in Mission. Guerrero vanished shortly after crossing into Reynosa and managed to evade capture until now.
Reports have suggested that Guerrero had connections with figures from the Gulf Cartel while he was fleeing. Law enforcement received multiple tips about his sightings, not only in Reynosa and Monterrey, but also at a Caribbean resort where he was ultimately arrested.
The former official is expected to arrive in Hidalgo County soon to deal with the sexual abuse charges, alongside several other pending accusations.
