Buffalo Bills Unveil New Stadium

The Buffalo Bills have been playing at the old Highmark Stadium for quite some time, but they officially inaugurated their brand new facility recently.

Notable figures attended the ceremony, including team owner Terry Pegula, Mary Wilson (the wife of former owner Ralph Wilson), and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. Now, Hochul isn’t exactly known for being the most charismatic figure in the sports world. Still, she attempted to energize the crowd, even trying to lead some cheers.

Unfortunately, her efforts fell flat.

Wearing Bills gear, Hochul kicked things off with enthusiasm, saying, “Okay, let’s get the party started, let’s go!” Yet, the response from the crowd was pretty lackluster—a few polite claps at best.

She apparently missed the cue and kept shouting, “Buffalo, let’s go!” trying to spark a call-and-response, but fans didn’t engage.

Seemingly frustrated by the silence, Hochul asked, “Okay, are you serious? Do you want to win the season championship with that kind of enthusiasm?” before attempting yet another chant, which again met with silence.

“You’ve got to give this place some good karma, right?” she quipped, referring to the new $2.1 billion stadium. It’s a bit ironic, isn’t it, considering her reputation in the political arena?

The Bills will officially open the 60,000-seat stadium on August 8 with a “Return of the Blue and Red” training camp practice. According to Frank Cravotta, the Bills’ senior vice president of design and stadium operations, the facility is nearly finished, sitting at 99.75% completion.

Stadium architects Populous designed it with features like underground heating coils to prevent frozen turf, specialized lighting for turf growth, a snow-melting system, and a wind-blocking canopy for fan comfort during Buffalo’s notoriously cold winters.

All in all, it seems to be a pretty impressive place. That is, unless Kathy Hochul is there to spoil the atmosphere.
