Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, along with her husband Doug Emhoff, found themselves in a rather awkward situation during the World Cup on Thursday.
Just before Team USA’s match against Türkiye—where they would ultimately lose 2-1—Emhoff shared a cheerful photo of the two of them with the caption, “Goal!” This was posted right as Türkiye was gearing up to score the decisive goal.
Later, as Harris reflected on the game, she cheered, “Let’s go @usmnt,” after the Americans managed to equalize in the 49th minute thanks to a goal by Sebastian Berhalter.
A video posted by Harris showed Emhoff in a Team USA jersey, draping a red, white, and blue scarf around her neck just before the photo was taken, while Harris sported a simple black leather jacket for the moment.
In a light-hearted jab, Harris vocally criticized NSYNC member Lance Bass, who had quickly snapped the picture.
Second Lady Usha Vance was also present among the crowds at Los Angeles Stadium, which was packed with around thousands of fans for the match.
A star-studded audience included actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, and Ashton Kutcher, along with NBA legend Scottie Pippen and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, who were there to enjoy the game.
This isn’t the first time Harris has shown her support for U.S. Soccer. Back in 2022, as Vice President, she celebrated a significant equal pay settlement with U.S. Soccer and marked Equal Pay Day with an event at the White House that featured members from the U.S. Women’s National Team, including Megan Rapinoe.
Emhoff has also been a public advocate for soccer. He led the U.S. presidential delegation to New Zealand during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for Team USA’s first match.
Reflecting on his love for the sport, Emhoff mentioned, “I was a soccer dad… [a coach] and then I donned a yellow suit with a whistle, short pants, and big socks to become a referee,” as he expressed his pride in being part of such a significant event.
“Being on that field, watching the kids play and the parents cheering, and now representing our country, it’s an honor to see these athletes perform,” he added.
Ultimately, the USMNT fell to Türkiye with a score of 3-2 on Thursday night.
