Bryce Harper’s Gesture Draws Attention at Nationals Park
During a game on Thursday, Bryce Harper gave a gesture to Nationals fans—though it wasn’t exactly what many might think.
As a group of shirtless fans yelled “forget Bryce Harper,” the Phillies first baseman hit a decisive two-run homer into the left field. After the win, he insisted, “It’s just my ring finger,” making it clear it wasn’t meant to be provocative. “Make sure it’s there.”
Harper has faced boos from the crowd at Nationals Park ever since he signed with the Phillies for a 13-year deal back in 2019. He had previously spent several seasons in Washington, where he was named the 2012 National League Rookie of the Year and also won the MVP award in 2015, during which time he was an All-Star six times.
Reflecting on the mixed reception, he noted, “That’s all part of it. I mean, it’s kind of strange coming from a fan base that’s followed me for years, but there are still plenty of folks here who appreciate me. So, it’s all in good fun.”
However, it’s worth mentioning that Harper hasn’t yet secured a World Series title. The Nationals won their championship the year after he left, and he missed another chance in 2022 when the Phillies lost to the Astros.
Used to the scrutiny, Harper knows that his confident demeanor often makes him a target for criticism across various ballparks. Interim manager Don Mattingly commented, “He thrives on the spotlight. It’s not something that intimidates him; it might even motivate him more when the crowd is against him.”
Recently, the Phillies have been on an impressive streak, marking a historic moment as the first team in MLB history to achieve game-winning home runs in the ninth inning for three successive games. In Thursday’s match, they managed an incredible comeback, erasing a five-run deficit by the sixth inning, and ultimately claimed the series against the Nationals with a 3-1 record.
