Closure of Florida’s Immigration Detention Center

The immigration detention facility in Florida’s Everglades, often referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz,” has officially shut down. Governor Ron DeSantis stated that the center had “served its purpose” and contributed to making Florida safer.

This temporary site opened last July and was established to deport approximately 21,000 undocumented immigrants. It was intended to be a short-term solution until a more permanent facility could be found, according to DeSantis during a news conference at the center.

Currently, the facility holds no detainees. DeSantis mentioned, “This has taken so many dangerous people off the streets, not just in Florida but across the U.S.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now able to handle detainees in alternative facilities, which wasn’t the case just last year. Back then, states had to step in to compensate for the facility gaps left by mass arrests during the Trump administration, particularly as many individuals entered the country under Biden.

DeSantis emphasized the mission’s success, stating, “There is no question that this mission has made Florida safer.” He also mentioned the dangers posed by some individuals being released, which threatened the well-being of Florida residents.

Even as the facility closes, DeSantis assured that the agency would maintain its collaboration with federal authorities on immigration enforcement matters, particularly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

While some officials from the Trump administration praised the center as secure and humane, it faced criticism from opponents and civil rights advocates.

Immigration reform advocates and some liberal media outlets reported that conditions at the facility, which included large tents, were unsafe and inhumane. A critical report by Amnesty International highlighted various issues—such as overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and problematic disciplinary practices—at Alligator Alcatraz.

Detainees described challenging living conditions, including poor hygiene, pest issues, and inadequate facilities, as reported by the Associated Press.

The tents contained bunk beds encircled by wire fencing—an arrangement that many found deeply concerning.

According to Tom Homan, White House Border Security Director, Florida remains pivotal in supporting immigration enforcement efforts even after the facility’s closure. He remarked, “Governor DeSantis has done a commendable job and will continue his efforts to ensure safety in this country.”
