Vandal with antisemitic motives scratches a swastika into a car on the Upper East Side

This week, a disturbing incident occurred on the Upper East Side where vandals defaced parked cars by carving swastikas into their hoods. Authorities are treating this as a hate crime, and it could be linked to an Israeli flag found inside one of the vehicles.

The owner, a 56-year-old woman, came upon the anti-Semitic vandalism on Friday morning, having parked the car on East 85th Street near First Avenue just three days earlier.

The discovery appears connected to the Israeli flag displayed in the back seat of the vehicle, as noted in reports.

Local elected officials, including Mayor Zoran Mamdani, have denounced the act. “The swastikas carved on cars on the Upper East Side are a despicable act of anti-Semitism,” he stated on social media. “This is a hateful and threatening attack on our Jewish neighbors and the values that define our city.”

He emphasized that all Jewish New Yorkers have the support of the city and that anti-Semitic actions will be addressed without exception.

City Council President Julie Menin also shared her condemnation. She noted that “this horrific symbol of anti-Semitism continues to appear in our streets” and lamented that this isn’t the first occurrence in her district. Menin called for collaboration with the NYPD, which is currently investigating the situation. She also remarked that the Jewish community is determined not to normalize anti-Semitism.

This incident unfolds amid a concerning trend of rising hate crimes in the city.

According to the NYPD, there was a significant increase in hate crimes reported in May, rising by 74.4% compared to the same month last year—up from 39 incidents to 68. Of these, over 60% were categorized as anti-Semitic.

Some community leaders have voiced frustration with how the current administration is handling these issues. Moshe Spern, president of the American Association of Jewish Teachers, indicated that the surge in anti-Semitic attacks is not surprising to the Jewish community. He also criticized the mayor’s comments and his administration’s policies for not effectively addressing the increase in intolerance.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Unit is on the case.
