New York Knicks Parade Sparks Engagement for Local Couple
While Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and the rest of the New York Knicks celebrate their championship victory, Daniela Phillippe is enjoying her own moment of joy in the city.
“We got engaged on top of a police car during the Knicks parade,” the 34-year-old shared. “It felt like a scene from a New York fairy tale.”
Amid the excitement and cheers of an estimated 2 million Knicks fans, Clarel Abin, 40, got down on one knee, presenting a stunning diamond ring while a surprised and tearful Phillippe exclaimed, “Yes!”
Abin, a barber originally from New York, expressed his elation: “It was their parade and Daniela’s 34th birthday. We were surrounded by police cars, and the entire city was out to celebrate. It was incredible.” The couple recently relocated to Tampa, Florida.
Traveling 18 hours to attend the parade, Phillippe had no inkling of the surprise that awaited her.
Celebrations filled the air, with over 1.25 tons of blue, white, and orange confetti being fired from cannons as the city reveled in the Knicks’ triumph in the 2026 NBA Championship.
While some couples took part in the festivities with their own romantic ceremonies, young lovebirds like Jillian and Andrew Solomon chose to get married on this celebratory day at City Hall, embracing the Knicks’ energy in their wedding attire. “I’ll always remember walking to the courthouse among thousands of Knicks fans,” recalled Gillian, 27. “We love this city and its amazing people.”
Phillippe and Abin share that passion for both New York and the Knicks. They connected via an online platform in 2023, bonding over their shared interests and enthusiasm for the team.
Abin reminisced about a moment during the finals when he told Phillippe, “They’re going to win, and we’re going to New York.” He couldn’t have predicted how perfect the timing turned out to be—celebrating their team’s victory alongside her birthday. On top of that, they had just received news from the jeweler that her custom ring was ready.
The ring, a 9.16-carat masterpiece featuring a baguette diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds, was crafted with love, representing how Abin feels about Phillippe. “I always say she’s the missing piece of the puzzle,” he noted, having planned the proposal for five months, unaware of its momentous context.
Phillippe was caught off guard when she realized they were atop a police vehicle. “We just jumped up there to see better,” she laughed, after an officer congratulated them and reminded them to be careful with the car.
The shared joy and the intensity of the moment brought a mix of laughter and tears. “I was shaking. I wanted to cry and laugh all at once,” she recounted. “I’ve never felt so loved.”
Now, as they eagerly plan their wedding, the couple hopes to infuse Knicks themes into their celebrations. Abin expressed wishes to tie the knot in New York and aims to exchange vows between 2027 and 2028.
Phillippe, excited about their future, added, “When we have our first baby, everything will be blue and orange and Knicks-themed.”
