Schumer’s Potential Support for Ocasio-Cortez

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer might find himself backing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, especially if her recent primary success continues to create waves, according to some insiders.

Schumer, known for his pragmatic approach, has navigated the political landscape for years, even penning a book in 2007 about strengthening the middle class.

“He’s sharp enough that if Ocasio-Cortez throws her hat in the ring for the White House, he could very well become one of her staunchest advocates,” said a longtime Democratic strategist from New York.

The senator, who is 75, has aligned himself with local left-wing figures in the past, famously declaring 2016 to be “Hillary’s time,” even supporting Hillary Clinton in her presidential bid back in 2013.

“Run, Hillary, run!” he spurred on Clinton, showing his support.

Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez, who is 36 and represents the Queens-Bronx area, has shifted her strategy, moving away from targeting incumbent House Democrats. Starting in 2024, she’ll be paying $260,000 a year to the party’s fundraising entity, a nod to the establishment Democrats.

Yet, she and her allies are gaining traction in pushing the Democratic Party’s left-wing agenda into more mainstream territory with three candidates winning nominations in Tuesday’s primary backed by New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani.

“She’s transitioned from an outsider to an insider,” remarked the operative.

The Democratic Party reacted this week to the results, celebrating victories that bolster the faction associated with Sen. Bernie Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez.

In a notable invitation, Kamala Harris asked Ocasio-Cortez to speak at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, highlighting the party’s ongoing commitment to addressing the Gaza situation.

This move, however, sparked criticism from Democratic Socialist Party leader Kareem El-Rafai, who demanded Ocasio-Cortez apologize for allegedly misleading the public about the conflict.

According to an establishment Democratic aide, after years of discussions, Ocasio-Cortez “genuinely respects and perhaps even feels an affinity for Schumer.” This could potentially lead to some unexpected alliances.

AOC mentioned earlier this week that a candidate in the Sanders tradition could indeed clinch a presidential victory. “He’s open to listening to her, and that matters,” the aide stated.

When questioned about a potential Senate bid, Ocasio-Cortez humbly replied, “I’m not here to break the news,” indicating she’s not ready to make announcements yet.

With Schumer, who has spent 45 years in Congress and the last 27 in the Senate, facing challenges, some Republican insiders believe his time may be running out as midterm campaigning heats up.

“If Schumer somehow withstands the Democratic shift towards socialism in 2026, AOC’s challenge in 2028 could end his career and push him into retirement,” one source speculated.

While Schumer refrained from discussing his own political future or Ocasio-Cortez’s aspirations for the presidency, he did emphasize the need for Democrats to come together in reclaiming Capitol control.

“We need to consider the entire nation,” he stated. “Progressives are making notable gains in places like New Jersey, Iowa, and Virginia. There’s a surge of progressive energy here in New York City. At the end of the day, my focus is singular: regaining the Senate and undoing the harm caused by Donald Trump.”
