Coach of Mercury states that Alyssa Thomas was suspended due to 'social media screenshots' following Caitlin Clark’s foul.

Alyssa Thomas’ rough play, which included punching Caitlin Clark in the throat and kneeing her, has sparked outrage. Many, including the league, condemned the actions, likening Clark’s experience on the court to that of a schoolyard victim. However, Phoenix Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts defended Thomas and criticized the league for her one-game suspension.

Before the Mercury’s game against the new Toronto Tempo team, Tibbetts voiced his concerns. He emphasized that the Mercury organization fully supports Thomas, stating, “First of all, the Mercury organization wants AT to know that she has 100% support.” He was clear in wanting the public to recognize that he, alongside the players, stood by Thomas despite her unsportsmanlike actions.

Tibbetts aimed to protect Thomas’ reputation within the league, describing her as a fierce competitor and a tough player. Yet, he also addressed accusations that Thomas had behaved poorly during the game, arguing, “The only thing that’s different about her is that she’s cheap,” while also expressing respect for Fever coach Stephanie White.

His frustration became evident as he voiced disappointment in the suspension process, claiming it lacked thoroughness. He noted that no one—including him, Thomas, or his security team—was interviewed in the investigation, questioning how the league could make a decision without their input.

Frustration lingered as he highlighted the absurdity of a one-sided inquiry. He pointed out that, contrary to what might be expected, the leadership neglected to involve those most connected to the incident. Tibbetts sarcastically remarked on the ridiculous expectation that he would play a part in deciding the suspension.

As he neared the end of his remarks, Tibbetts took a shot at fans who seemingly supported Clark and linked the social media frenzy to Thomas’ suspension. He pointed out that while it’s vital to keep the game clear of issues, relying on social media posts could steer decision-making in a troubling direction.

Tibbetts’ comments also hinted at a perceived bias against Clark. He expressed frustration with discussions around factors like race that, in his view, could influence the interpretation of the situation. His suggestions—though, perhaps unintentionally—implied that there may be different standards at play based on a player’s race, leaving the conversation open to interpretation.

He wrapped up by stating that the narrative wouldn’t change even if roles were reversed, which remained controversial and open to critique.

The continuing support from Thomas’ teammates and coaching staff raises questions about objectivity regarding the incident. There’s a troubling lack of acknowledgment that such behavior warrants disciplinary action, regardless of who is involved. Moreover, the frequency of targeting superstars like Clark is alarming, and it seems the league should take steps to address this seriously.

The Indiana Fever are set to face the Los Angeles Sparks soon, but they’ll be without their star player, Caitlin Clark, who’s sidelined due to a back injury sustained in the game against the Mercury.
